Wendover Shed members were treated to a demonstration of chisel sharpening by Lydia from Axminster Tools on 27 July. 12 of the Shedders gathered round for her hour-long demonstration on a sunny Saturday morning. She showed how to use professional methods to restore a perfect sharp edge on chisels of all sizes.
This included the use of honing guides with diamond or waterstones (unsurprisingly, the more you pay, the better they are), with tips such as applying ink from a market pen to show sharpening progress, and using a thin steel rule to give a slight reverse edge. Lydia also gave tips on maintaining plane bodies as well as sharpening the blades.
All Wendover Shed members are eligible for a discount card from Axminster, covering most items except branded power tools. You have to go to a branch in person however, and give them the Shed’s postcode: HP22 6JN. The closest branch to Wendover, is in the Cressex Business Park in High Wycombe.
