Shed of the Year Finalist… Again

Wendover Shed has been named a finalist in the UK Men’s Sheds Awards 2026 a nationwide celebration recognising the power of Men’s Sheds to reduce loneliness, improve wellbeing and strengthen communities.

The Shed is shortlisted in the Green Shed category for its outstanding work on creating a sustainable community despite being fully off-grid.
Wendover Shed was established in 2023 and has grown from a single shipping container into three dedicated workshops, a large covered outdoor working area, a private-space summer house and three storage sheds. Everything has been developed by our own Shedders, sympathetically within our beautiful rural surroundings in the Chiltern Hills.
What makes Wendover Shed particularly unusual is that the entire site operates off-grid.
Our renewable energy system has grown alongside the Shed and now comprises 33 solar panels and three storage batteries. On normal bright and even cloudy days, our workshops are powered entirely by the sun. Our battery capacity also provides substantial resilience during the darkest winter months. Looking ahead, our Shedders are also experimenting with a prototype wind generator to explore how wind power might contribute to the Shed’s future energy needs.

This is not a token off-grid solution. It powers three working workshops, including woodworking and metalworking machinery such as woodturning lathes, metalworking lathes and milling machines – as well as the all-important electric kettle!

We have deliberately demonstrated that a busy, practical community workshop can operate successfully without a mains electricity connection.
Our next major sustainability project tackles another challenge of being completely off-grid: water.
We have drilled our own borehole and our Shedders are now installing the pumping and filtration system that will provide drinking water for the Shed. This is being undertaken largely using the skills, ingenuity and practical experience of our own members.

The project also has the potential to benefit our neighbours. Wendover Shed is situated alongside allotments where plot holders currently rely heavily on collected rainwater. During prolonged dry summer periods this can become increasingly difficult. We hope our borehole will provide a reliable supplementary water supply for the allotments.
We also intend to share what we learn with Wendover Parish Council, helping them explore whether similar sustainable water solutions could be used at other allotment sites and potentially reduce reliance on mains water.
Our off-grid approach extends to sanitation too: the Shed uses a composting toilet rather than conventional mains drainage.
Environmental responsibility also influences the projects our Shedders undertake for the wider community. We regularly make bug hotels, bird boxes and bat boxes for local councils and community organisations, helping provide habitats for insects, birds and bats and encouraging biodiversity locally.

Sustainability at Wendover Shed is therefore much more than the addition of a few environmental features. It has shaped the way the entire Shed has been created and operates.
Renewable electricity, battery storage, an independent water supply, composting sanitation, wildlife projects and sharing sustainable ideas with our community are all part of the same approach.
We believe Wendover Shed may be one of very few Men’s Sheds in the UK capable of operating entirely off-grid for both electricity and water.
More importantly, our Shedders have shown what a group of volunteers can achieve through practical skills, ingenuity and a desire to minimise environmental impact – while creating something that benefits not only our members, but also the wildlife, allotment holders and wider community around us.

Beyond the environmental benefits, all of this sustainable infrastructure supports a thriving and active community. Wendover Shed is open four days a week and supports around 45 active Shedders, providing friendship, purpose, practical activity and a welcoming place to spend time together. In doing so, the Shed helps alleviate loneliness and social isolation within our community. For us, sustainability is therefore about more than energy and water: by building an environmentally sustainable Shed, we are also helping to build a socially sustainable community.

Winners will be announced at the UK Men’s Sheds Awards Ceremony on 19 November 2026, hosted at Baskerville House, Birmingham.
