The Well
It may sound crazy, but yes, we plan to drill for water at The Hog. The aim is to supply our grey and eventually drinking water needs, and that will probably mean going down 10 or 12 meters. Our MK I well reached 3m through manual labour. MK II brought in some mechanical assistance from Subaru Geo-Environmental Services and we reached 8m, but no water, yet! Watch this space for MK III!
Current Status
Tech nerds with a Grafana account, can follow our progress on our boring dashboard. There's a recent snapshot below.
The Well - MK I
Reusing one of our members 'lock down projects', a drilling rig made from an old TP climbing frame, we're off to a flying start - who needs the gym...
Our manual effort got us to nearlt 3m in depth, but having to manually empty and clean the drill bit every 6" became quite onerous!
The Well - MK II
Fortunately, James Edley from a local Geo-Environmental Services company, Subadra, happed upon the shed, spotted our hand-made drilling rig and said "Ah, I might be able to help you there!".
Subsequently, James and his mate Ben turned with their "small" Thunderbirds-style drilling rig and in no time at all managed to bore us an 8m deep hole. The bad news is that we didn'y hit water. The good nes is that the guys have a larger rig and will be back!
Now, The MK I guys quickly pointed out that although James and Ben went deeper with their mechanical rig, the hand-made rig has actually removed more material with it 6" diameter. Yes, it is a competition!
The Well - Mk III
Watch this space for when James and Ben return for the third episode in this adventure, aiming to beat the MK I team's extraction efforts.
